It’s a wrap on South African Book Fair 2019!
We’d like to thank all our visitors, participants and partners whose passionate commitment to books and reading helped turn Constitution Hill into the place to be last weekend.
We knew it was going to be a great event when Johannesburg’s first spring rains welcomed learners to our dedicated school’s programme on Friday. The day was a resounding success, filled with storytelling, talks and workshops for learners and educators. We are positive it has helped nurture a new generation of readers and book lovers – and so play a big part in fulfilling the objective of our Fair.
Saturday and Sunday proved as successful, and we were particularly thrilled to see families from so many different backgrounds attending performances and readings in the National Book Week Magic Tent – and other elements of our programme.
Our sessions lived up to their billing as providing illuminating discussion and impassioned debates on topical issues, with most filled to capacity.
Constitution Hill, and the Women’s Jail, proved to be a great new home for SA Book Fair. From book launches to workshops, book readings, live cookery demonstrations, tours, poetry and more, the historic site was humming with activity over the whole weekend. Kaya FM’s outside broadcast unit, the informative and inspiring skills development provided by the Authors’ Corner, the buzzing Marketplace and the 60-plus media in attendance all added to the positive energy that made this year’s event unforgettable.
There are too many highlights to mention but d’bi.young anitafrika closed our Fair with the launch of a new collection of poetry – dubbin poetry: the collected poems of d’bi.young anitafrika. She was one of over 100 authors, storytellers and poets who participated in SA Book Fair 2019 and her contribution across our Fair was nothing short of thrilling – and brought to brilliant life the many different ways that #OURSTORES can be told.
