The South African Book Development Council (SABDC) is the representative body of the South African Book Sector. The primary aim of the SABDC is to increase access to books in South Africa and to get more citizens reading for leisure. In order to achieve these goals, the SABDC have implemented a variety of programmes and projects. Through ongoing research and strategic planning sessions with stakeholders from across the book value chain, four priority programmes have been identified, namely Indigenous Languages Publishing; Transformation; a National Reading Campaign; and a Book Export Programme. Both National Book Week and the South African Book Fair are strategically scheduled on the South African calendar to ensure that the objectives of the Council are met and that resources are maximised.
