Amid calls made ever more convincingly for more diverse representation in the world literary landscape, and as more African voices find their space on the continent and internationally, South African Book Fair (SABF) 2017 will be painting the walls of the Newtown Precinct in Johannesburg with the words of the city’s people. Poetry will be curling and dancing along the city’s sidewalks, and African philosophers will be kept busy debating the times we live in.
Under the auspices of the Fair, we will be creating a powerful moment in the history of African voices, a moment when they are heard in all their beauty and complexity. Making this happen will be a large collective of progressive philosophers, poets, writers, editors, illustrators, publishers, booksellers, librarians and readers. Their imaginings and ideas will find room for expression and a receptive ear in the intensely creative spaces the Fair is preparing for all its exhibitors and visitors.
A gathering of this sort has the power to reimagine the culture of a place through conversation. Through the telling of stories… #OURSTORIES.
