FULFILLING MANDELA'S CALL
“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
– Nelson Mandela
Mandela month calls on us all, every day, to make the world a better place – and our dedicated 2019 Schools’ Programme aims to do just that through a full day of storytelling, talks and workshops for learners and educators.
Keenly focused on nurturing a love of books and reading in children from the Early Childhood Development stage to Grade 11, our Friday September 6th programme includes a performance of the beloved Chris van Wyk tale, Mr. Hare Meets Mr. Mandela by the National Children’s Theatre. Other highlights include a reading and superhero drawing session with award-winning author Sifiso Mzobe (who translated the fantasy adventure Shadow Chasers series into isiZulu), the launch of This Thing Called The Future by American writer, Jessica Powers, and a poetry session for young adults with celebrated poets Quaz Roodt and Nthabiseng JahRose Jafta.
Working with the Literacy Association of South Africa, we also have four workshops that focus on providing educators with exciting new tools and insights for teaching reading and stimulating a love of books in their learners.
“There are certain precautions you should take to prepare yourself for a fruitful study career. You must brush up your knowledge through systematic reading of literature and newspapers.”
– Nelson Mandela
As parents, siblings, grandparents, relatives and friends who read, we’re taking our #readbecause commitment to South Africa’s children. Alongside being essential for a fulfilling school, study and work life, the benefits of reading are plentiful and wide-ranging so this July we are going to be reading to a child as a way of stimulating their thirst for knowledge, their creativity, imagination and empathy – and so much more.
